<center><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/is_God_dead.jpg" width="400" height="527" alt="Is God Dead?"></center>
<br />
<p>

John T. Elson, former religion editor of Time Magazine and author of the famous 1966 cover article "Is God Dead?", died on September 7th at the age of 78.
<br /> <br />
The controversial issue was introduced to a shocked public a couple of months before I was born. Here I am one year later after carefully reading the article and considering its momentous implications:

<center><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/eg_one_year.jpg" width="377" height="384" alt="kid pic"></center>
<br />
<p>

Kidding! I probably wouldn't have looked <i>that</i> happy after reading it. But the article was destined to resurface later in my life. The cover has been featured for many years at the end of our video <a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/videos/mad.html" target=_blank><i> The Madman</i></a>, a treatment of Nietzsche's well-known parable by that name, in which he announced to his equally shocked 1880's contemporaries that "God is dead, and we have killed him."

<center><a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/videos/mad.html" target=_blank><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/videos/vidpics/mad_preview.jpg" width="352" height="256" alt="Nietzsche"></a></center>
<br />
<p>

It is, in my opinion, to Nietzsche's and Elson's credit that their musings on the loss of spiritual faith in our technologized, consumerist world continue to piss off some yet inspire others who share their lament and struggle to achieve a genuine experience of the sacred amidst the Spectacle's continuous assault on the conditions and sensibilities that make true spirituality possible.
<br /> <br />
Mike and I encounter this struggle and engage in this debate every time we perform <a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/videos/mad.html" target=_blank><i> The Madman</i></a>, and are indebted to Nietzsche and people like Elson who seriously address what we consider to be one of the most important issues of our time.
<br /> <br />
For information on Elson and a link to his article, see his New York Times <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/18/business/media/18elson.html?_r=2&adxnnl=1&ref=obituaries&adxnnlx=1253983981-Dbp3wgizXd62nlsk+xveSw" target=_blank>obituary notice</a>. Special thanks to Dina Nadelhaft for bringing it to my attention.

Severe weather wasn't enough to dampen the atmosphere created by visionary music promoter Nick Katona and his wife Jennifer, who worked ceaselessly to make all the participating musicians and artists feel welcome in an environment of intense creative collaboration.

<br /><br />
Our show at the Kirkland Art Center was well attended and well received, thanks in no small part to Nick and Jennifer's promotion and support of our work and meticulous attention to the technical logistics required for our performance. Many thanks to them, the KAC, and the good people of Clinton for making this upstate gig a memorable one. We hope to participate again in this excellent festival next year.

TSTS hit the Maine coast on Wednesday August 19th, in picturesque Belfast at a music and arts venue called <a href='javascript:void window.open("http://rootsandtendrils.com/", "_blank", "location=1,status=1,scrollbars=1,resizable=yes,top=0,left=0,

<center><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/r&t2.jpg" width="475" height="708" alt="Thus Spoke The Spectacle"></center>

<br />
<p>
Local band <a href='javascript:void window.open("http://www.treebyleaf.org/", "_blank", "location=1,status=1,scrollbars=1,resizable=yes,top=0,left=0,
width=800,height=630");'>Tree by Leaf</a> began the night by rocking the house with a rousing set of previously released songs and new compositions from their upcoming album. Absolutely check out this Christian-based band led by singer-songwriter and lyricist extraordinaire Garrett Soucy. The band features beautiful and haunting vocals by Garrett's wife Siiri, and powerful and eclectic accompaniment by Cliff Young on keyboards and Eric Sanders on drums.

<center>
<h3>TREE BY LEAF</h3>

<img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/tbl.jpg" width="486" height="409" alt="Tree by Leaf"></center>

<p><br />
Mike and I then presented a 50-minute TSTS set to an enthusiastic response, followed by excellent and engaging conversation.
<br /><br />
Thanks again to Garrett for inviting us to perform, Meg and Bub of Roots and Tendrils for hosting the show, Read Schuchardt for setting the wheels in motion, and the good people of Belfast for coming out on a sweltering night for some R&R societal critique. We're hoping to hook up with Tree by Leaf, Meg, and Bub again on our next trip to Maine, possibly next June in conjunction with the 11th annual Media Ecology Association convention in Orono, if not sooner.

<br /><br />
<p>

If you're going to write only one email in your life, you may as well make it good.

<br /> <br />

Neil Postman made the most of his one foray into cyberspace, a witty and brilliant send-up of online communication. If only he had lived to see texting and Twitter... But I suspect his message would be the same.
<br /> <br />
Neil co-founded the Media Ecology program at NYU. In 1997, he posted to the department's listserve the following tongue-in-cheek smackdown, channeling the ghost of his mentor and fellow media theorist Marshall McLuhan:

<br /> <br />
<h3><i>
This is the Ghost of Marshall McLuhan speaking to you. I don't have to tell you from what world I come. I am using Chris Nystrom's facility in order to reach you. I will say what I have to say only once. You will not hear from me again unless you persist in your foolishness.
<br /> <br />
Does the word "books" mean anything to you? Do you have so much time on your hands that you can afford to waste yourselves on this infernal machine? Have you already accumulated so much wisdom that you no longer need to read the best that has been thought and written? Is this the way you honor the work and life of my great friend and disciple, Neil Postman? Do any of you actually know how to spell?
<br /> <br />
I have now read all of your idiotic messages. Hear, now, The Law: </i>
<br /> <br />

<center><b>EVERY MEDIUM TAKEN TO ITS FURTHEST EXTENT FLIPS TO ITS OPPOSITE </b></center>
<br />
<i>
Thus the written word, which is the source of all the intellect we have, when used in this unholy fashion becomes a medium for the expression of all our stupidities. This, you have demonstrated amply. Enough, I say.
<br /> <br />
I must now return from whence I came. Remember what happened to the Hebrews when they did not follow the Law.
<br /> <br />
Ghost
</i></h3>

On July 17th we played at Bluestockings Books in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Here's the ad posted by the venue:

And deliver we did. Whether we freed anyone from the clutches of the Spectacle is yet to be seen...
<br /><br />
We really dig the vibe down there, having played downtown at The Kraine Theatre and The Living Theatre a number of times. The space is small but intimate, and Kimmi, Becca, and the the rest of the bookstore's volunteers were helpful and hospitable. Thanks to Malav Kanuga for setting the show up.

<p>

The premise of Neil Postman's classic societal critique <b><i>Amusing Ourselves to Death</i></b> is that Aldous Huxley's dystyopian vision, as put forth in his book <b><i>Brave New World</i></b>, better reflects the reality of modern-day America than does George Orwell's nightmare society depicted in his classic <b><i>1984</i></b>.

<br /><br />
The validity of this claim will be the subject of a later blog post, but for now <a href="http://www.recombinantrecords.net/docs/2009-05-Amusing-Ourselves-to-Death.html" target=_blank>click here</a> for an excellent visual depiction of Postman's take on the difference between Orwell's and Huxley's prophecies. It's produced by an artist named Stuart McMillen.

<p>

On July 7th I screened <b>Thus Spoke The Spectacle</b> at Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado:

<br />

<center><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/ds_notice.png" width="742" height="358" alt="Denver Seminary"></center>
<br /><br />
<p>
As you can see from the subtitle, a central focus of my presentation was a discussion of the ways in which the ubiquitous elements of spectacle society, our media and technology, tend to obscure, subvert, usurp, and co-opt the genuine human impulse toward the sacred. This is a conversation Mike and I have been having in relation to our show for years, and one that has begun to take shape more tangibly in our post-performance and post-screening discussions - particularly at our Media Ecology Association screening last summer in Santa Clara and performance last month at the Jesuit school St. Louis University.
<br /><br />
I therefore welcomed the opportunity to present TSTS at Denver Seminary, brought about by an invitation from philosopher, professor and preacher <a href="http://theconstructivecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/" target=_blank>Douglas Groothuis</a>. Doug and I share many common influences such as Neil Postman, Jacques Ellul, and Lewis Mumford, and our strains of media critique overlap significantly although we don't agree on (nor did we expect to) every aspect of the political ramifications of our analyses. Doug's thoughtful insights following the screening, as well as the thoughtful questions and feedback of his students and other attendees, made the presentation especially gratifying.
<br /><br />
As an added bonus Doug gave me one of his many books, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Truth-Decay-Christianity-Challenges-Postmodernism/dp/0830822283" target=_blank>Truth Decay: Defending Christianity Against the Challenges of Postmodernism</a>, which I'm finding illuminating and enjoyable. I think that Doug's explanation of postmodernism, and the contrast between its notion of "truth" (quotations insisted upon by the postmodernists themselves) and the traditional conception of Truth, can be valuable to Christians and non-Christians alike. I owe <a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/qotd/all.html#47" target=_blank>Quote of the Day #47</a> to Doug's reference to Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and am especially looking forward to the appendix with the Postman-esque title "Television: Agent of Truth Decay".

<br /><br />
For more on Doug's philosophy and views, see his blog <a href="http://theconstructivecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/" target=_blank><i>The Constructive Curmudgeon</i></a>. It's "curmudgeonly" in the best sense of the word.

On Saturday June 20th Mike and I performed <b>Thus Spoke The Spectacle</b> at Saint Louis University for the Media Ecology Association's 10th Annual Convention.

We must say that hanging out informally with these people is as entertaining and intellectually stimulating as the actual panels, screenings, and performances, which were themselves top-notch.

The issues raised in the official conference presentations carried over into vibrant discussions and debates at meals, parties, and informal gatherings around campus.

This is the second MEA convention I've attended, following on the heels of last year's convention in Santa Clara, California, where we were honored to receive the MEA's <i>John Culkin Award for Outstanding Praxis in the Field of Media Ecology.</i>

<p>
This convention was even more exciting for us as we got to do a full TSTS performance for an audience as packed with kindred spirits as any we play for. Among what other group are people like Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman, Lewis Mumford, Jacques Ellul, Guy Debord, and so many other influences of ours not only recognized but meticulously studied and debated?
<br /><br />
It was a great honor to meet Marshall McLuhan's son and collaborator, Eric McLuhan, and to talk to him at length about our project and media ecology in general. And the conference being held at the university of Father Walter Ong gave us the opportunity to learn more about this media ecology pioneer as well.

If you're interested in media, media studies, media literacy, media reform, or the interaction between media, technology, and society, then media ecology is for you. Look into joining the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mediaecologyassociation" target=_blank>Media Ecology Association</a>, participating on its listserve, and attending its next convention in Maine, June 10-13, 2010.

<p>
Thanks to the MEA organizers who invited us to perform, including Sara van den Berg, Paul Soukup, Janet Sternberg, and Lance Strate. Special thanks to Abigail Lambke and Dan Frierdich for securing a great performance space and managing all the tech issues; Robert Francos for his many excellent photographs; and all of our MEA friends and supporters for making this performance of <b>Thus Spoke The Spectacle</b> truly one to remember.

<p>

Previously, I wrote about Day 1 of the media literacy conference at Pratt Institute in my posts <a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/2009/06/media-conversations-conference-part-i.html" target=_blank>Media Conversations Part I</a> and <a href="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/2009/06/media-conversations-part-ii-david-walczyk.html" target=_blank>Media Conversations Part II</a>. This installment concerns the screening of the film <i>Consuming Kids</i>.

<br />

<center><img src="http://www.thespectacle.net/blog/images/consuming_kids.jpg" width="184" height="270" alt="consuming kids"></center>
<br /><br />
<p>
<a href="http://www.mediaed.org/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=134" target=_blank><i>Consuming Kids</i></a>, subtitled "The Commercialization of Childhood," is a must-see film put out by the Media Education Foundation documenting the pervasiveness of marketing to children. Here's the description from the film's website:

<h3>
Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children's advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children's marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids.

The film documents the history of the deregulation of children's marketing, bringing us to where we are today. Most countries still have laws against pervasive marketing to children. Bowing to corporate pressure, the U.S. government began dismantling such regulations in the 70's, and killed them altogether during the Reagan years.

According to the film, while children account for something like $40 billion in direct sales of children's products, they influence <i>$700 billion</i> in overall sales to adults. The upshot is that marketers know that the <i>real money</i> is in finding out how to get kids to influence their parents' overall purchasing decisions and habits, not just their purchases of kids' products.

With these goals and the absence of regulation, it's hardly surprising that corporations employ an army of psychologists, sociologists, scientists, marketers, childhood development experts, etc., to train kids in nagging, to study the eye movements of three year olds sitting in from of the TV, to discover what shapes and images appeal to a three year old as opposed to a five year old, and so on - basically, to dissect the childhood psyche to find out how to turn kids into lifelong, brand-loyal consumers. The movie also discusses the invention of the category "tween" as an enormous marketing ploy, and hits on many other angles of the issue such as gender-based marketing differentiation, violence, product placement, and more.

What we do about this is up to each of us individually. At the very least, I think it's worth noting that there are people out there looking to take possession of the eyes, ears, hearts, minds, and souls of our kids. No, not in an <i>"Excellent, Smithers!" Mr. Burns rubbing hands with maniacal glint in eye backroom conspiracy theory</i> sort of way:

Just average corporate Joes and Josephines looking to make a buck or trillion. Which in the long run is probably scarier in the Hannah Arendt <a href="http://www.iep.utm.edu/a/arendt.htm#H6" target=_blank>"banality of evil"</a> sense.

In his intro to the movie, David Walczyk asked something like "what truth is a scientist recording the eye movements of a three year old looking to find?" Good question...
